Climate Consciousness Amidst Pandemic

Climate change has been a hot topic in our country after the devastation caused by the three consecutive tropical cyclones namely, Quinta, Rolly and Ulysses. But what is climate change? Climate change is defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as the changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. It refers to any change in climate change over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity.

Global climate has been constantly changing but the “warming” that we are experiencing can be attributed to mostly due to the increase of greenhouse gases due to human activities such as illegal cutting down of trees, improper waste disposal and burning of fossil fuels.

The coronavirus pandemic or COVID-19 that we are experiencing now has brought us challenges which changed our lives. This challenge requires sustainable actions to reduce the risk of disasters.

The National Climate Change Consciousness Week aims to create awareness and educate the people on global warming and climate change and giving information and campaign to secure the cooperation of both the private and public sector and the entire population to help mitigate climate change and global warming.

In this time of climate crisis and pandemic, we have to be strong and resilient to face the worst impacts and consequences such as floods, typhoons, rising seas and droughts.

As a student and responsible citizen, I will do my part in my own small way to instill awareness and consciousness to my fellow countrymen about global warming and climate change. I can be a role model to them.

To start of, I will start in our home. I will tell my mother to switch to LED lights because LED lights use less energy than any other lighting and even lasts longer. I will adapt the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover and Repair System, conserve water, plant a tree, bike or walk to go somewhere if I can, educate others on the importance and value of our natural resources, and volunteer for clean ups in my community.

Now is the time to take action on climate change and its impacts. Change starts now. Together, let’s save the Mother Earth.
