NSED And Me

We know we cannot underestimate earthquakes, typhoons, flashfloods or any other disasters, nor can we assume we’ll have enough warning time, hence, the importance of emergency planning is needed. If an earthquake hits, we won’t have the necessary advanced alerts on the opportunity to double-check or even triple-check our plans.

The Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill is a program of the government as a part of its continuous effort to promote earthquake preparedness along with the awareness of tsunami emergencies. This is scheduled every November to promote both earthquake and tsunami preparedness. This is in support of the World Tsunami Awareness Day which is being observed every 5th of November.

NSED is conducted to test the preparedness of people, the government and the country as a whole in facing disasters especially earthquake and to educate them about the importance of preparedness against earthquake. NSED enjoins all public offices and agencies, as well as the private institutions with the aim of stimulating the disaster preparedness and consciousness spirit of the Filipino people against all unforeseeable catastrophe.

Participating in an earthquake drill will help me understand what to do in case I am not with my family during an earthquake. This will help me coordinate where, when, and how to reunite with them after an earthquake. This will also help me learn how to react correctly and automatically when the shaking begins. This will help me to be better prepared to respond appropriately and effectively to signs of danger or to directions by civil authorities.

We need NSED to feel the real effects of the disaster. This would test the capabilities of the country to respond in case of a strong earthquake.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes strike anytime and anywhere. We can’t stop this natural phenomena, but we can control the potential dangers of its occurring. Preparedness is the key. Start to prepare and be aware. We need to be prepared no matter what that owing to the fact that we never know or when an earthquake may occur. So be prepared and aware.

Education Under The New Normal

2020 has been a rough year for many of us. We’ve been facing challenges years ago. But COVID-19 was different. Having this kind of problem is new to many of us. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of corona virus. This new virus were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. On January 30, 2020, the Department of Health reported the first case of COVID-19 in Philippines. It was a 38 year-old female Chinese national. Until this one case suddenly spread through our country. And the cases became hundreds of thousands. Then COVID-19 becomes a major health risk of the Philippines. From then on everything has changed. There’s so many things that we cannot do right now because of COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns, quarantines, wearing face masks and face shields, disinfecting things, physical distancing are a must to continue for a lifetime. These and more compose the new normal. For us, students, this affects our education.

I don’t think we can achieve quality education at this time of pandemic for so many reasons. First of all, self-learning is not easy. Many student struggles and so are the parents, so they pay someone to answer the tasks in the module. There are also incidents wherein students commit suicide due to failure in meeting the deadline for submission of modules. Even the online classes encounter problems. Like having poor internet connection. There is a big possibility that students under online class can access undesirable websites where they can learn bad things that will lead to curiosity.

Quality education can only be achieved in school wherein students and teachers can interact face to face. It could have been better if academic freeze was implemented because every Filipino student deserves to get a quality and relevant education for their future.

Towards A Better Community

We all know that this past few years, Philippines has been experiencing challenges and problems. Just like the natural calamities, which is normal because every year we experienced some of it. Natural calamities include flash floods, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, and other geological processes. These calamities caused millions of destruction of properties and establishments and also deaths of many people. But when 2020 came, there’s even bigger challenges and problems that we have to face. Way back January 12, 2020, Taal Volcano erupted after how many years.. taal Volcano is located at the province of Batangas and it is the second-most active volcano here in our country. The Taal Volcano eruption has caused death of 39 people and 199 people injured. The seven barangays that existed on the island previous to the eruption were completely wiped out. Number of villages were also destroyed. Crops suffered from deposit of ashes. Because of the black ash from the volcano, survivors needed face mask to cover their nose, to avoid inhaling the black ash. Later on, on the 30th of January, same year, 2020, the Department of Health reported the first ever case of COVID-19. It is said that the first case was a 38 year-old female, Chinese national. After a month, another Chinese national man turned out positive for the virus. On March 7, the Philippines confirmed its first local transmission. Since then, the virus has spread. To limit the spread of virus, Government Officials implemented lockdowns or community quarantines, mandatory wearing of face shield and face mask, and always washing hands throughout the country since March 15.

So what do we people need to do in times of this challenges? In what ways can we help? We need to be resilient. Resiliency is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Resilience is important because it gives people the strength needed to process and overcome hardship. And unity is the state of different areas or groups being joined together to form a single country or organization. Unity is needed for survival. Unity protects us from all the evil doings, hence we people should help each other and together we should fight and face the negative things. Government officials has done their jobs, they have been implemented the rules, and for us people to be able to help, it is our responsibility to follow these rules. We must be at one to fight and to overcome this problem.

In every problems and challenges we face, we must be resilient and we need to add it with unity. We must be united, we must be resilient, because we only have the same goal. And there goes the saying “Strength is always with unity”. With these, we can make a better community.
