We know we cannot underestimate
earthquakes, typhoons, flashfloods or any other disasters, nor can we assume
we’ll have enough warning time, hence, the importance of emergency planning is
needed. If an earthquake hits, we won’t have the necessary advanced alerts on
the opportunity to double-check or even triple-check our plans.
The Nationwide Simultaneous
Earthquake Drill is a program of the government as a part of its continuous
effort to promote earthquake preparedness along with the awareness of tsunami
emergencies. This is scheduled every November to promote both earthquake and
tsunami preparedness. This is in support of the World Tsunami Awareness Day
which is being observed every 5th of November.
NSED is conducted to test the
preparedness of people, the government and the country as a whole in facing disasters
especially earthquake and to educate them about the importance of preparedness
against earthquake. NSED enjoins all public offices and agencies, as well as
the private institutions with the aim of stimulating the disaster preparedness
and consciousness spirit of the Filipino people against all unforeseeable
catastrophe.
Participating in an earthquake
drill will help me understand what to do in case I am not with my family during
an earthquake. This will help me coordinate where, when, and how to reunite
with them after an earthquake. This will also help me learn how to react
correctly and automatically when the shaking begins. This will help me to be
better prepared to respond appropriately and effectively to signs of danger or
to directions by civil authorities.
We need NSED to feel the real
effects of the disaster. This would test the capabilities of the country to
respond in case of a strong earthquake.
Natural disasters such as
earthquakes strike anytime and anywhere. We can’t stop this natural phenomena,
but we can control the potential dangers of its occurring. Preparedness is the
key. Start to prepare and be aware. We need to be prepared no matter what that
owing to the fact that we never know or when an earthquake may occur. So be
prepared and aware.
