Epilogue

Everything that has a beginning has an ending. October last year, my grade 10 journey started, but look how time flies so fast, we are now about to end this school year. This school year is not that easy. I've been feeling mixed emotions. But still, I managed to get through this and survive, despite of the breakdowns.

For this quarter, I have learned a lot of things. I was not that familiar with the topic of our lessons, so I had a hard time to understand it. But with the help of my classmates, I did understand it well. Now, I can identify, define, and describe Microsoft FrontPage. I know how to create a FrontPage Website. I also know how to apply a Design Theme to it. Through this quarter, I also enjoyed making a blog post. The topics of the blog post that we made was interesting.

Epilogue, meaning a final or concluding event. We're now at the epilogue of our grade-10 journey. I am somehow sad and happy at the same time. Sad because we didn't even get to interact with our teachers face to face, due to this pandemic. And happy because, ending means new beginnings. A bigger responsibility is waiting ahead. I am proud of myself for surviving this school year. Cheers for everyone who survive this school year!

Reimagine. Recreate. Restore

For too long, we have been exploiting and destroying our planet’s ecosystems. Every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch and over the last century we have destroyed half of our wetlands. As much as 50 percent of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 percent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks, like forests and peatlands, at a time humanity can least afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have grown for three consecutive years and the planet is one pace for potentially catastrophic climate change.

World Environment Day is globally celebrated every year on June 5 and is the United Nations’ principal amplifier to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. The theme for this year is “Ecosystem  Restoration” and brings into focus the critical importance of preserving eco-fragility for collective well-being. The emergence of COVID-19 has also shown just how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens including corona virus to spread. Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting and reversing this damage to go from exploiting nature to healing it. It means repairing billions of hectares of land so that people have access to food, clean water and jobs. It means bringing back plants and animals from the brink of extinction, from the peaks of mountains to the depths of the sea. But it also includes the many small actions everyone can take, every day: growing trees, greening our cities, rewilding our gardens or cleaning up trash alongside rivers and coasts.

By simply putting your trash on the trash can or bin and by planting trees in your backyard can be a step to have a healthy ecosystem. These little things can make a big change for our surroundings. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihood, counteract climate change and stop the biodiversity.

"Freedom"

The declaration of independence is one of the most important milestone in Philippine history. The country was colonized by many nations for hundreds of years. Imagine, achieving your freedom after all the hardships you’ve been through. It is priceless.

The Philippine’s Independence Day is a national holiday, so government officers are closed. There are absolutely no classes in all schools. Many business establishments are closed except shopping centers. Public transport such as buses, passenger jeeps, and tricycles still operate but their rotes may be limited due to the closure of streets used for parades. Independence day obviously stands as a reminder of that long-fought battle for freedom and the people behind it. It is a day that Filipinos should remember the courage and sacrifices by soldiers and heroes who fought for or motherland. Inspired by their strength to fight and dedication to free the country against colonizers should be remembered by the generations of today and the years to come.

As we enjoy the holiday, may we not forget its significance in our country’s history. Before our heroes achieved our independence, they offered their talents and wits, and put their lives at risk. May we learn from them as citizens of the Philippines.

A Mother is Everything!

Mother’s day is a special day and an occasion celebrated across the world in most families. It was celebrated every 9th of May of the year. We celebrate Mother’s day to express our utmost love, respect, honor, and gratitude for our mother. On this day, the society acknowledges all the contributions and efforts of mothers. No creature in this universe can be as potent as a mother. She is the one who is probably endowed with all the power. God has given her the power to take up the affairs of the world. A mother’s love is unconditional. Our mothers try to shield us from all harm and help us in however way they can. She is so patient that she listens all of our problems and gives the best solution to each one of them. Even if we get wrong somewhere in life, she never backs off her hands and keeps us motivating till the time she is alive.

A mother is everything! She can alone handle all the relationships and give one the taste of all the love one gets from different members of their family. She is the best friends you can share your life without bothering to be judged. It is her selfless love that a mother showers upon her children. She laughs when her children do, she is happy when her children are and she cries when her children do. She is the only person who will not leave their children alone whatever may be the circumstances. The person who makes us realize God’s presence in every one of our lives is our mother. She is that sole being who has more trust in us than the trust we have in ourselves.

It doesn’t necessarily mean for being a mother, and an individual has to give birth to a child. It is the nurturing and love that is given to a child by a female, or a feminine gendered individual provides as they take the responsibility of a child makes them a mother.

A mother is a living angel in our life who easily handles everything in the house. She is such a satisfied creature that she takes up a huge responsibility on her shoulders and that too without being paid for it. Though, her contribution is so very much bigger that we cannot compensate for it but at least we can show our gratitude to our gorgeous mother by simply saying the words, “I love you” and “Thank you”.

Women are Not “JUST” Women (Thematic)

What does women empowerment mean? Women empowerment refers to the process of giving women control over their choices and access to the opportunities and resources that allow them to thrive. While there’s been progress, gender inequality remains a persistent issue in the world. Empowering women politically, socially economically, educationally, and psychologically helps narrow the gap.

During the earlier times, women in the society were considered the weaker sex and men are the superior sex. Women were only given notion to perform the household chores, take care of their children and submit to their husband because they were blinded by the thought that men are superior and women are weak. The women were always belittled by men and they don’t have the right to speak up for themselves and also don’t have the right to vote.

But as time went by, because of education, women managed to be the individual that they are now. Women now have a great impact in a country’s development. They have become the foundation of a smooth and stable community and making a change in the society. From being a plain housewives and caretakers of their homes, they are now showing their capabilities in different professions that were only for men in the past. We now have women educators, entrepreneurs, manager’s, frontliners, and even in the world of politics. Women can match a man’s capabilities such as teaching, running a business and be great leaders and serve the people. A lot of woman have made a lot of contributions in our country’s development, but they were not appreciated. But things changed. Women of today are now equal to men, maybe even better than men. They now have the freedom to speak and voice out their personal opinions. They are now a lot wiser than before. They know their self-worth and won’t let other people belittle them or bring them down. Women capabilities are now at par with that of men. Women are not just women. They are more than that. Time may come that women may make a big change for our country’s progress and development.

There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women!

Binatbatan Festival

The Naturales of Vigan chose “Tres de Mayo” of 1883 in honor of Apo Lakay of the Simbaan a Bassit as an act of thanksgiving for having saved Vigan from a deadly epidemic in 1756. It evolved from this and majestically transformed today as the most colorful and significant festival to BigueƱos as it focuses on the remembrance of Apo Lakay’s deliverance as well as promoting the local fabric, Abel Iloco. The term binatbatan refers to the first step of the weaving process, wherein the cotton balls are separated from the seeds by beating them with the use of two bamboo sticks. Later on, binatbatan inspired an Ilocano folk dance. Costumes and props were created with abel iloco and the choreography was inspired by the weaving process.

There are several activities lined up during the festival period, including street dancing,
kalesa (horse carriage) parade, fishing competition, abel house decor contest, carabao painting contest, traditional games and a trade and food fair, where handicrafts and local delicacies are sold, such as Vigan longganisa (native sausages) and bagnet (fried pork) at competitive prices. Another event is the quintessential pageantry of the Santacruzan. The historico-religious parade cum beauty pageant commemorates the discovery of Jesus Christ’s cross by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great. This Filipino tradition started in the mid-19th century, sometime after the Immaculate Conception of Mary was declared official dogma in 1854.

Sadly, we were not able to experience or witnessed any of these activities because of COVID-19. Due to the increasing cases of COVID, social gatherings are strictly not allowed. We should not risk our health. For now, staying at home and keeping ourselves healthy must be our priority. Let’s hope and pray that this will come to an end.

Close to Ending

Two quarters have been passed, and 3rd quarter is about to end also. This means we are getting close to the end of our school year. The tasks that I did was not that easy, but I still did my best to answer them. As I was answering the tasks, I was able to learning a lot of things. Learning on your own was tough. Learning anything requires commitment and the ability to push through the uncomfortable feeling of not being very good until reaching competency. While on the path to competency, a little motivation can go a long way.

For this quarter’s lesson, it was so unexpected, because it was not about technology stuff. It was focused on research stuffs. In the first weeks of the module of this quarter, I was so confused why do we have to list the tourist attractions, delicacies, cultures and crafts of our community. I was also frustrated because I didn’t know much about our community, because I rarely go out of my house. But with the help of my family, I managed to fill the list. Due to this I did discovered and learned a lot about my community.

All in all, this quarter has been awesome for me. I will surely never forget the learnings that I had. This will be cherished forever. As this school year is about to end, I will enjoy the remaining days of being a Grade 10 student. I hope to have an amazing and awesome learning again for the next quarter.
