Education Under The New Normal

2020 has been a rough year for many of us. We’ve been facing challenges years ago. But COVID-19 was different. Having this kind of problem is new to many of us. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of corona virus. This new virus were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. On January 30, 2020, the Department of Health reported the first case of COVID-19 in Philippines. It was a 38 year-old female Chinese national. Until this one case suddenly spread through our country. And the cases became hundreds of thousands. Then COVID-19 becomes a major health risk of the Philippines. From then on everything has changed. There’s so many things that we cannot do right now because of COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns, quarantines, wearing face masks and face shields, disinfecting things, physical distancing are a must to continue for a lifetime. These and more compose the new normal. For us, students, this affects our education.

I don’t think we can achieve quality education at this time of pandemic for so many reasons. First of all, self-learning is not easy. Many student struggles and so are the parents, so they pay someone to answer the tasks in the module. There are also incidents wherein students commit suicide due to failure in meeting the deadline for submission of modules. Even the online classes encounter problems. Like having poor internet connection. There is a big possibility that students under online class can access undesirable websites where they can learn bad things that will lead to curiosity.

Quality education can only be achieved in school wherein students and teachers can interact face to face. It could have been better if academic freeze was implemented because every Filipino student deserves to get a quality and relevant education for their future.
